Octane and Avalanche Unveil AI‑Powered Vulnerability Scanner for Avalanche Developers

In a major boost for blockchain security, Octane AI and Avalanche (AVAX) have jointly launched a new AI-powered vulnerability scanner designed specifically for developers building on the Avalanche network. Announced on August 1, 2025, the tool aims to help dApp creators detect critical bugs, misconfigurations, and logic flaws in smart contracts before they are deployed—offering a much-needed safeguard as DeFi and GameFi projects on Avalanche gain momentum.

With over $5 billion in TVL (total value locked) and a rapidly growing ecosystem of decentralized applications, Avalanche has become a prime target for malicious actors and exploit attempts. The new scanner, simply named OctaScan, leverages machine learning models trained on real-world exploits, combined with static code analysis, to surface vulnerabilities with high accuracy.

The tool is currently available in public beta for all developers through Avalanche’s developer portal and Octane’s GitHub.

Why Avalanche needed an AI-first security tool

Over the past year, Avalanche has seen accelerated adoption across subnets, gaming protocols, and DeFi primitives. While the chain’s modular design and near-instant finality make it appealing for users and developers, it also introduces a broader attack surface—especially for smart contracts interacting across multiple chains and assets.

Traditional manual audits, while thorough, often require weeks of turnaround time and high costs, making them less viable for smaller projects or rapid release cycles. OctaScan aims to fill that gap by delivering instant, AI-augmented feedback during the development phase, much like a security-focused IDE plugin.

This initiative follows a broader industry trend where AI is increasingly being used to simulate attack patterns, identify vulnerabilities, and suggest code fixes, reducing reliance on reactive audits or community bug bounties after deployment.

How OctaScan works

OctaScan integrates directly with the developer’s coding environment or GitHub repositories. Once enabled, it automatically scans Solidity, Vyper, and Move smart contracts for known and emerging security flaws.

The system combines three core components:

  • Pre-trained AI models that have been fine-tuned on datasets of past DeFi hacks, flash loan exploits, reentrancy attacks, and logic bugs.
  • Static code analysers that flag dangerous patterns such as unchecked transfers, overflows, and improper role access.
  • On-chain simulation testing that mimics contract behavior across different state conditions to identify edge-case vulnerabilities.

Developers receive a detailed vulnerability report along with severity scores, fix suggestions, and references to best practices. Octane claims its models have achieved a 92% detection rate in pre-launch testing, significantly outperforming open-source linting tools.

Collaboration highlights Avalanche’s focus on security

The partnership between Avalanche and Octane reflects an increasing prioritisation of protocol-level security tools across major chains. While Ethereum and Solana have mature audit ecosystems, Avalanche’s integration of OctaScan gives developers on its platform native access to scalable auditing without external dependencies.

Emin Gün Sirer, founder of Avalanche and CEO of Ava Labs, commented:

“Security is no longer optional—it’s foundational. By integrating AI-based scanning tools directly into our developer stack, we’re making it easier to launch safe, scalable, and compliant applications.”

According to Ava Labs, the long-term plan is to embed OctaScan into core IDEs, integrate it with subnet developer toolkits, and eventually expand to cross-chain audit automation as Avalanche-based apps become more interoperable.

Developer reception and future roadmap

Early adopters of the scanner include several top Avalanche dApps in the GameFi and DEX sectors. One team noted that OctaScan caught a reentrancy edge case that two previous manual audits had missed. Others praised the tool’s ability to simulate malicious input vectors and visualise contract state transitions across calls.

Looking ahead, Octane plans to release a multi-chain version of the tool compatible with Ethereum, Arbitrum, and Base. It is also experimenting with LLM-assisted contract generation, where smart contracts are written collaboratively with security-aware language models that can proactively avoid risky code patterns from the start.

The next update to OctaScan will include:

  • Expanded support for Cairo (StarkNet) and Sway (Fuel)
  • Visual dashboards for tracking bug resolution trends over time
  • An AI-driven “contract rewrite” assistant for high-risk functions

The bigger picture: AI meets protocol security

As the blockchain space continues to mature, AI-assisted auditing may become as standard as gas estimation or ABI compilation. Projects like OctaScan suggest a future where security is embedded by design, not added as an afterthought.

This collaboration also signals that Avalanche is serious about enabling secure growth at scale, particularly as institutions, fintech startups, and gaming giants begin to explore subnets and custom deployments.

If adopted broadly, OctaScan could mark a turning point where smart contract security shifts from manual review bottlenecks to continuous, intelligent oversight, paving the way for safer, faster innovation across Web3.
